0–12 month developmental milestones
Motor, speech and social development milestones during the first year.
Children develop at their own pace. The milestones below are averages — do not worry if your child reaches them a month later. Talk to a doctor only if a child CANNOT perform a specific action 2+ months later than expected.
Milestones by month
| Age | Typical skills |
|---|---|
| 2 mo | Smiles, tracks with eyes, lifts head when prone. |
| 4 mo | Holds head steady, laughs, grasps objects. |
| 6 mo | Rolls from back to stomach, sits with support, babbles. |
| 9 mo | Sits unsupported, crawls, recognises syllables. |
| 12 mo | Stands with support, takes a few steps, says 1–2 words (mama, dada). |
Contact your paediatrician if…
4 months: no smiling, no eye-tracking. 6 months: no rolling, no head control. 9 months: no babbling, no sitting. 12 months: no standing with support, no syllables.
