The ABCDE method for checking moles
Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, Evolution — five signs to watch for.
The ABCDE method is an internationally recognised baseline screening algorithm for early melanoma detection. It is not a diagnosis — just a checklist of warning signs to bring to your doctor.
The five signs
- A (Asymmetry) — one half differs from the other
- B (Border) — irregular, blurred, notched edges
- C (Color) — multiple colours or colour change in a single mole
- D (Diameter) — larger than 6 mm (pencil-eraser tip)
- E (Evolution) — change in size, shape or colour over time
When to see a doctor
Any ABCDE sign + a new mole after age 35 + itching, bleeding or pain — book a doctor's visit promptly.
