Pre-school vision and hearing — when to check
Parent-oriented guide to your child's vision and hearing signals.
A child's vision and hearing reach full capability around age 5–7. Routine paediatric check-ups are the best way to monitor development, but parents can also notice the first warning signs at home.
Vision signals
- Squints to see things further away
- Bumps into objects or people
- Blinks excessively
- Complains of headaches or eye strain after looking at objects
- Eyes squint or move independently
Hearing signals
- Doesn't respond to their name or loud sounds
- Speaks very loudly or very softly
- Frequently asks for things to be repeated
- Consistently turns the same side toward sound
- Language development slower than peers
