Counting your pulse and when to call a doctor
How to count your pulse, normal ranges, and warning signs that require immediate medical contact.
Pulse rate and rhythm reflect cardiac status. Most patients can accurately measure their pulse at home with just a watch.
How to count the pulse
-
1
Find the pulse
At the wrist (radial) or neck (carotid). Use your index and middle fingers, not the thumb.
-
2
Start counting
Begin from zero (0, 1, 2, 3...) for 60 seconds, or 30 seconds × 2.
-
3
Record the result
Also note rhythm — regular or irregular.
